Southern Outer Banks

The Outer Banks (OBX), as dominated by places like Nags Head and Duck, is a well known tourist destination. The Southern Outer Banks (SOBX), the next series of barrier islands south from Cape Hatteras, is far less famous than its northern neighbor.

Interestingly, only islands in the SOBX are referred to as “banks,” that is to say Core Banks, Shackleford Banks, and our very own Bogue Banks, the home of the Flying Catnap by the Sea. The better known OBX are all referred to as “islands.” Go figure.
