The Town of Pine Knoll Shores takes visitor safety very seriously. The Town Council just adopted adopted an ordinance that designates “swimming only” areas at high-use parts of the beach; no fishing allowed because bait in the water may attract sharks. These areas will be marked with Blue Pennant signs about 200 yards apart. There will also be a sign that says no fishing between the Blue Pennant signs.
The new ordinance is based on biologist speculations that high water temperatures this year are bringing in more baitfish. We have also had water that is murkier than usual due to a very strong, consistent, and multi-week South-West blow. Sharks are following the baitfish and encountering humans in reduced visibility.
We ask that all our Catnap friends and guests take similar precautions: move a bit East or West to get away from people in the surf if you are fishing; move a bit East or West to get away from people fishing if you want to swim. There is PLENTY of beach available in front of the Catnap.
