There have been 7 shark incidents along North Carolina beaches in the last few weeks. Some folks have been badly hurt but the good new is that the waters around Pine Knoll Shores have been untouched thus far.
It’s hard to find the right balance between keeping all the Catnappers safe through reasonable safety precautions and causing unnecessary anxiety. The ocean is fun to swim, fish, and surf in so it’s important to take some common sense precautions to reduce the danger from sharks.
North Carolina Sea Grant has a useful flyer covering practical shark safety tips. Three of the most important suggestions are:
1. Avoid swimming at dawn and dusk
2. Avoid wearing jewelry and bright clothing in the water
3. Avoid swimming in areas where people are surf fishing
